    La Prova Generale – The Final Evening Trial

    The morning begins with La Provaccia, the final trial before the Palio. The rest of the morning and early afternoon are yours to experience Siena as the Contrade prepare for the race and the historic centre gradually transforms for the events ahead.

    The Historical Procession

    During the afternoon, the Historical Procession – Corteo Storico makes its way towards Piazza del Campo. Representatives of Siena’s Contrade, flag bearers, drummers and historical figures enter the square in a spectacular ceremony that forms an essential part of Palio day. From your reserved viewing position, you can experience the atmosphere in Piazza del Campo as the procession unfolds and the city prepares for the race.

    Reserved Balcony Viewing Overlooking the Mossa

    Take your position on a reserved balcony overlooking the Mossa area, the starting and finishing section of the racecourse. From this elevated position, you can follow the final preparations in Piazza del Campo and observe the complex starting procedure as nine horses line up between the ropes and the tenth horse, the rincorsa, determines the moment of the start.

    Then the ropes fall and the Palio begins: three laps of Piazza del Campo decide the winning Contrada.

    Having discovered the traditions and Contrada culture with your Local Palio Expert the previous day, race day becomes the culmination of the entire experience rather than simply a horse race.

    For the winning Contrada, the Palio continues well beyond the finish line, and spontaneous celebrations may provide another glimpse into the extraordinary connection between the race, the Contrade and the people of Siena. The day is intentionally left at leisure, giving you time to enjoy the city after two days centred around the traditions and events of the Palio.
