Horse Races were very common in every major medieval Tuscan city, and still today despite modern times, the Palio horse race resists in Siena. The name ‘palio’ comes from the painted silk cloth, pallium, awarded to the winner. The Palio is a thrilling race between ten horses (barberi), whose jockeys ride bareback, and each represent a specific Contrada (historic neighbourhood) of Siena. The race takes place in Campo Square twice a year: once on July 2nd in honour of Our Lady of Provenzano and once on August 16th in honour of Our Lady of Assumption.

GRANDSTAND PALIO di SIENA TICKETS – here at TuscanTeam we have experienced the Palio horse race several times and surely a sit on the grandstand guarantees a very exciting point of view. Grandstand are erected directed on the track, so close to the racetrack that you will feel the movement of air created by the galloping horses while the excitement and cheering will overwhelm you. You will see the horses dart 3 times and you will hold your breath until the end of the race and the beginning of the party of the winning Contrada. The Grandstand Ticket include the view of the Historical Parade (Corteo Storico), which takes place in the Piazza del Campo before the horse race. Each Grandstand Palio Ticket is numbered, and it guarantees 1 seat. The square is quite irregular, looks like a seashell, and the whole square is divided in 54 different grandstands (each viewing spot is different from one

PRIVATE BALCONY PALIO di SIENA TICKETS – the Balcony is a private property and offers a higher Palio di Siena viewpoint: you should consider a spot on a Private Balcony if you prefer a different service. Some private balconies have direct access from the Campo Square instead others have access from back streets and are part of private apartments overlooking the Campo Square. Each viewing spot is different from one other and the most requested are the balconies with direct view of the starting and arrival line.
