Walk with your guide to one of the Contrade and witness the sacred ritual led by the priest of the Contrada, a moment of profound symbolism and emotion that few outsiders ever see.

As the sun begins to set, the Historical Procession enters Piazza del Campo. Approximately 600 men in medieval costumes parade around the square, recalling the grandeur and power of the Republic of Siena. Every banner, drumbeat, and flag-waving display sets the stage for the main event.

Finally, the horses enter the Piazza from the Cortile del Podestà, the Palio is hoisted on the Judges’ Stands, and the final flag-waving ceremony, della Vittoria, is performed by the Standard Bearers of all the Contrade. 5. Day 5 The Day of Celebration after the Palio di Siena

After the adrenaline and excitement of the Palio di Siena, Day 5 is dedicated to reflection, celebration, and the living traditions that make Siena unique. In July and August, the day after the race of July 3rd or August 17th, holds a very special meaning. The city awakens from the intensity and tension of the Palio, carrying the echoes of hooves, cheers, and centuries of history.

For the winning Contrada, the celebration continues: shared meals, spontaneous processions, and the traditional thanksgiving visit to the Virgin Mary mark the day. The <strong data-start=”960” data-end=”975”>Drappellone, the prized Palio banner, is carried to the Cathedral by Contrada members in a moment of deep spirituality and strong identity. Victory is not just sporting, it is an act of devotion, community pride, and belonging.

For the Contrade that did not win, the day is one of reflection and renewed hope for the next Palio. The excitement may have faded, but the sense of community, tradition, and shared history remains as strong as ever.

Throughout the city, the atmosphere is intimate and authentic. Siena slowly returns to normal life, yet every corner still vibrates with the memory of the race, the colors of the Contrade, and the passion of the people. The Palio is more than a horse race, it is the soul of the city.

Even in case of rain, the Palio is never canceled. If the track becomes slippery or unsafe, the race is postponed, with safety as the top priority.
